In order to serve the 2010 Soccer World Cup Stadium (Mbombela), the Client, Mpumalanga Department Public Works, Roads & Transport commissioned VIP Consulting Engineers to design and supervise construction of four bridges namely:
- Bridge 1 Overpass over the existing N4 route;
- Bridge 2 Overpass over the Pretoria-Maputo Electrified Railway Line;
- Bridge 3 Crossing of the Crocodile River;
- Bridge 4 Overpass over the Nelspruit-White River Branch Railway Line; to
form part of the eventual P166-1 route which bypasses Nelspruit. The alignment forms a bypass for traffic from White River/Mashishing to Barberton but would temporarily channel traffic from White River and Sabie to the New Mbombela Stadium.
The works was fast tracked to be completed before the 2010 World Cup and this had been achieved by extensively introducing precast, prefabricated structural elements.
In the end a pleasing, permanent finish had been achieved.
