VIP Consulting Engineers was appointed by the employer to act as the main consultant and construction monitor for this project. The DRT intersection is one of its kind, using a phased approach to accommodate traffic more effectively and efficiently.
The employer’s objective was to obtain a Section 82 Certificate from Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in terms of the Town Planning and Township Ordinance (Ordinance No.15 of 1986). In order to obtain this certificate the Employer must comply with the requirements of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for the installation of bulk civil engineering services for the proposed township of Witfontein Extension 78.
The works included the following:
- The upgrading of the existing Serengeti Eastern Outfall Sewer to a minimum pipe diameter of 250mm.
- The construction of the bulk water pipeline along the R21 Expressway and the First Avenue to provide a bulk connection point to the township.
- The construction of First Avenue.
- The doubling of the R21 Expressway between the R23 and the First Avenue.
- The upgrading of First Road between the R23 and First Avenue.
- The Upgrading of the R23/R21 Expressway intersection.
- The upgrading of the R23 First Road intersection.
- The upgrading of the High Rd/Pomona Road Intersection
- The alterations on the R21/R23 off-ramp.
- The construction of the bulk stormwater outfall pipeline and outlet.
- Locating, moving and protecting of existing services.
